IEEE, at the University of Balamand

From fewer than 10 volunteers to 100+ students across three IEEE societies, IEEE UOB has grown into a community built around opportunity, collaboration, and impact.

Through hands-on learning opportunities, professional networking, and career development resources. We strive to create an inclusive community where students can collaborate, innovate, and grow, leveraging IEEE’s global network to build skills and make meaningful contributions to both their fields and society.

Our history

From ten volunteers to a hundred members

  1. Where it began

    The branch is founded

    IEEE UOB Student Branch was established by a team of fewer than ten student volunteers, marking the beginning of a growing IEEE community at the University of Balamand.

  2. A breakthrough year

    Grand Tech 2017 and Lebanon’s most active branch

    In its first full year, IEEE UOB organized Grand Tech 2017, bringing together more than 150 attendees. The IEEE Lebanon Section named it the Most Active Student Branch in Lebanon, and the university awarded it Event of the Year for Grand Tech ’17 and the Community Projection Award.

    Recognizing a year of exceptional activity, growth, and impact across campus.

  4. Region 8

    Regional Exemplary Student Branch Award

    IEEE Region 8 recognized the branch’s outstanding performance, engagement, and contribution to the IEEE community.

    Recognised twice by the University of Balamand

    The Professional Development Award for the programme the branch runs for its members, and the Community Service Award for the work it does beyond campus.

IEEE stands for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. It is the world’s largest technical professional organization for advancing technology.

It traces back to 1884, when Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell founded the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. The Institute of Radio Engineers followed in 1912, and the two merged in 1963 to create the modern IEEE, which now has over 400,000 members across more than 160 countries.

Through five main areas: developing technical standards such as Wi-Fi and Ethernet, publishing research and journals, offering educational programmes and certifications, supporting global humanitarian initiatives, and providing policy advocacy on technology-related issues.

IEEE UOB gives clear instructions on how to register for each competition and challenge. Registration usually means reviewing the eligibility criteria, completing the forms, forming a team where one is needed, and preparing to take part.

IEEE offers several levels, each with its own benefits: Student, Graduate Student, Associate, Member, Senior Member and Fellow.
